Title: Nubar Gulbenkian

Description: Nubar Gulbenkian (Nubar Sarkis Gulbenkian; 1896-1972), shown late in life in London wearing his traditional monocle and lapel orchid, riding in an elegantly furnished car that was custom built for him (in the fashion of a London taxi, or Hackney carriage, which Gulbenkian admired); the Turkish born Armenian oil magnate was the son of Calouste Gulbenkian (Calouste Sarkis Gulbenkian; 1869-1955), and, like his father, was a celebrate philanthropist, but, unlike his father, was also a colorful playboy socialite adorning every London social event for decades; a gourmet, he once stated that "the best number for a dinner party is two - myself and a damned good head waiter" he was educated in England at Harrow and Trinity College and thought himself British, but held on to his Turkish and Iranian citizenships, which he used during World War II to gain access to Vichy France as a citizen of a neutral country where he did some amateur spying for British intelligence.
