Description: October 19, 1922, Pacific Ocean: An Aeromarine 39-B plane makes a landing approach to the deck of the USS Langley (CV-1); the USS Langley was converted from the 19,360-ton collier USS Jupiter in 1920, becoming the first U.S. aircraft carrier, named after aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley; the Langley served as a training ship for hundreds of U.S. Navy pilots, who later served with the USS Lexington (CV-2) and USS Saratoga (CV-3); the Langley was converted to a seaplane tender in 1937 with the classification of AV-7; at the outbreak of World War II, the ship saw service in the Philippines, Australia, and Java; on February 27, 1942, the ship was attacked by Japanese planes, with five bombs striking the carrier, killing sixteen crew members; USS Langley (AV-7) was abandoned off Tjilatjap, Java, sunk by it accompanying destroyers USS Whipple (DD-217) and USS Edsall (DD-219) after the destroyers fired nine four-inch shells and two torpedoes into the ship;
