Description: October 16, 1913, Mare Island, California: USS Jupiter (AC-3) at sea and being moved by tugboats; the 19,360-ton collier USS Jupiter (AC-3) was converted in 1920 to the first United States aircraft carrier, and renamed the USS Langley, after American aviation pioneer Samuel Pierpont Langley; its sister ships, the collier USS Cyclops (AC-4), disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle area on March 4, 1918, with a loss of 306 passengers and crew, the single largest loss of life in U.S. naval history, other than that resulting from combat, and the collier USS Proteus (AC-9), vanished on November 23, 1941 with a complement of 158, and the collier USS Nereus (AC-10) vanished on December 10, 1941 with a complement of 236, both in the same Bermuda Triangle area;
