Title: USS Ranger, 1778

Description: February 14, 1778, Quiberon Bay, France: The USS Ranger is saluted by French vessels as it arrives under the command of Captain John Paul Jones (1747-1792), bearing the news that British General John Burgoyne's army was surrendered at Saratoga, news that inspired the French to join with the Continentals in their war against the British; the Ranger was a 308-ton sloop of war in the U.S. Continental Navy, which was the second U.S. warship to receive a salute from a foreign nation (the first being the USS Andrew Doria, salted by the Dutch upon its arrival at St. Eustatius in 1776); the Ranger was captured by the British in 1780 and commissioned in the British fleet as the HMS Halifax; in addition to the first Ranger being part of the Continental Navy, nine more ships named Ranger served in the U.S. Navy;
