Description: John Nicolay (Johann Georg; February 26, 1832-September 26, 1832, frail private secretary of Abraham Lincoln (February 25, 1809-April 15, 1865), sixteenth President of the U.S. (1861-1865); Nicolay came from a few days rest in Cuba to represent the president at the flag-raising ceremonies at Fort Sumter, South Carolina, on April 14, 1865; the Union flag had been lowered four years earlier when Confederate troops burned the fort at the start of the American Civil War (1861-1865); the same flag was raised again over the fort as a symbol of the war's end; German-born, Nicolay immigrated to America and settled in Illinois where he edited the Pike County Free Press newspaper at Pittsfield, Illinois; he became Illinois secretary of state and then Lincoln's private secretary and biographer;
