Title: John Scalise

Description: John Scalise (1900-1929), Italian gangster, and Albert Anselmi (1883-1929), Italian gangster, under arrest for killing two police officers and wounding another in a running gunfight, with police chasing Scalise, Anselmi and Mike Genna on Western Avenue after the trio fired shots from their car into another car occupied by George "Bugs" Moran and Vincent "The Schemer" Drucci (the latter was wounded); the car in which the gangsters were riding at high speed crashed into a telephone pole and the police and the three gangsters exchanged fire, Genna mortally wounded and staggering into an abandoned cellar to hide, but where he was quickly located (he was D.O.A. when taken to the hospital); Scalise and Anselmi ran out of ammunition and surrendered (they are shown handcuffed, standing next to the police car before being taken to Cook County Jail); both men were convicted of manslaughter and given fourteen years in prison, but they were acquitted and released in 1927, their second and third trials were reportedly fixed by their employer, Al Capone, crime boss of the South Side of Chicago; Capone allegedly paid bribes to the judge and jurors in the subsequent two trials of his top killers more than $100,000 and, upon their release, gave a lavish party in their honor; two years later Capone personally killed both Scalise and Anselmi, after learning that they were planning to kill him and take over his crime empire; assassins; gangsters; hired killers;
