Byrd (Richard Evelyn Byrd; 1888-1957), American naval officer and aviation pioneer, welcomes Amelia Earhart (1898-1937?), American pilot, as the first female passenger in a transatlantic flight in a tri-motor Fokker airplane called Friendship, purchased from Byrd for Earhart by publisher George Palmer Putnam and flown from Newfoundland to Wales on June 17-18, 1928 by pilot Wilbur Stultz, shown standing right of Earhart; Putnam divorced his wife Dorothy and married Earhart on February 8, 1931; she set her own flying records, becoming the first woman to fly the Atlantic in a solo flight in 1932, and flying solo from Hawaii to the mainland in 1935; she was lost in an around the world flight in 1937, her remains never found; Earhart was the role model for the part played by Rosalind Russell in the 1943 film Flight for Freedom; air records; aircraft; airplanes; aviation pioneers; aviatrix; disappearances; female aviators; female pilots; film;
