Title: Battle of Resaca de la Palma

Description: Battle of Resaca de la Palma; engraving depicting the Battle of Resaca de la Palma, Mexico, on May 9, 1846, early in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848); the heavy, day-long action early in the war took place at a ravine from which Mexican troops retreated across the Rio Grande River; many Mexicans drowned, besides 262 killed, 355 wounded, and 150 captured or missing; U.S. losses were 39 killed and 83 wounded; U.S. forces in the battle were led by Gen. Zachary Taylor (November 24, 1784-July 9, 1850); known as "Old Rough and Ready," he led American troops to victorious battles in the Mexican-American War and in previous wars, and became the 12th President of the United States (March 4, 1848 until he died in office on July 9, 1850); the war was a U.S. and Mexican territorial dispute between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers that led to open war between the two countries on May 13, 1846; the war ended with U.S. troops in possession of California, the Southwest, northern Mexico, and central Mexico from Veracruz to Mexico City; in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded to the U.S. the territories of California and New Mexico and all the land up to the Rio Grande River, and also relinquished its claim to Texas; in return, the U.S. paid Mexico $15 million;
