Description: Battle at Churubusco; painting of the battle in 1847 during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848); Churubusco guarded the approaches to Mexico City; Mexican Gen. Santa Anna (Antonio de Padua Maria Severino Lopez de Santa Anna y Perez de Lebron; February 21, 1794-June 21, 1876), then also president of Mexico, led his troops into a fortress that had been a church and convent, to defend against U.S. Gen. Winfield Scott ( June 13, 1786-May 29, 1866) and his men; U.S. forces prevailed, but at a loss of 133 killed and more than 900 wounded; in the defeats at Churubusco and earlier at nearby Contreras, Santa Anna lost more than a third of his army; with U.S. forces only five miles from Mexico City, Santa Anna withdrew into the capital and requested an armistice while peace negotiations could be considered; fighting suspended on August 24, but when negotiations collapsed on September 7, Scott and his forces resumed the offensive in the war; the war was a U.S. and Mexican territorial dispute between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers that led to open war between the two countries on May 13, 1846; the war ended with U.S. troops in possession of California, the Southwest, northern Mexico, and central Mexico from Veracruz to Mexico City; in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded to the U.S. the territories of California and New Mexico and all the land up to the Rio Grande River, and also relinquished its claim to Texas; in return, the U.S. paid Mexico $15 million;
