Description: Assault at Contreras; painting of about 3,300 U.S. troops led by Generals Gideon Pillow (Gideon Johnson Pillow; June 8, 1806-October 8, 1878) and Persifor Smith (Persifor Frazer Smith; November 16, 1798-May 17, 1858) engaged in a two-day attack on Contreras in the Valley of Mexico in 1847 during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848); Contreras and Churubusco guarded the approaches to Mexico City; Mexican troops led by Gen. Gabriel Valencia (1799-1848) were routed, resulting in 700 killed and 800 captured; U..S. casualties were 6o killed and wounded; Smith later became one of the last governors of California before it became a state; the Mexican-American War was a U.S. and Mexican territorial dispute between the Nueces and Rio Grande Rivers that led to open war between the two countries on May 13, 1846; the war ended with U.S. troops in possession of California, the Southwest, northern Mexico, and central Mexico from Veracruz to Mexico City; in the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, Mexico ceded to the U.S. the territories of California and New Mexico and all the land up to the Rio Grande River, and also relinquished its claim to Texas; in return, the U.S. paid Mexico $15 million;
