Title: Admiral Karl Donitz

Description: Admiral Karl Donitz (AKA: Karl Doenitz; September 16, 1891-December 24, 1980), right, congratulates U-boat officers on their return from convoy routes in the Atlantic Ocean during World War II in 1942; U-boat is English for the German word U-Boot, meaning German military submarines used in World War I and World War II; they were used mainly against Allied shipping, especially merchant convoys bringing supplies from the British Empire and the United States to the islands of Great Britain during World War II; Donitz commanded the German submarine fleet in World War II, then later the entire German Navy; in the final days of the war, Hitler named Donitz as his successor; after Hitler committed suicide, Donitz assumed the office of President of Nazi Germany, a post he held for only about twenty days when Germany surrendered to the Allies; at the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, Donitz was convicted of war crimes and served ten years in prison; the story of U-boats in WWII was dramatized in many films, including the 1943 film Action in the North Atlantic; the 1943 film Corvette K-225; the 1953 film The Cruel Sea; the 1957 film The Enemy Below; the 1981 film Das Boot (The Boat); the 2000 film U-571; and the 2004 film In Enemy Hands;
