Ford (Gerald Rudolph Ford, Jr., Leslie Lynch King, Jr., 1913-2006), American politician and thirty-eighth President of the U.S.; two assassination attempts were made on Ford's life, both by California women; the first of these occurred on September 5, 1975, when, in Sacramento, California, Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme, a follower of mass murderer Charles Manson, aimed a.45-caliber pistol at Ford when he reached to shake her hand, but there was no bullet in the firing chamber; Fromme was sent to prison for life; the second attempt on Ford's life was made on September 22, 1975, in San Francisco, California, when Sara Jane Moore fired at Ford with a revolver when about forty feet distant, her aim spoiled by a bystander, Oliver Sipple, who grabbed her arm; Moore was sent to prison for life, paroled on December 31, 2007, after serving thirty years in a federal prison.
