Description: George Atzerodt (George Andreas Atzerodt; June 12, 1835-July 7, 1865), one of the conspirators involved in the plot to assassinate Abraham Lincoln (February 25, 1809-April 15, 1865), sixteenth President of the U.S. (1861-1865); Lincoln was shot by American stage actor John Wilkes Booth (May 10, 1838-April 26, 1865) on April 14, 1865, and died the next day, shortly after the end of the American Civil War (1861-1865); Atzerodt, a thirty-three-year old house painter of German extraction from Port Tobacco, Maryland, on the Potomac River, intended to kill Vice-President Andrew Johnson (December 29, 1808-July 31, 1875), who became the seventeenth President of the United States (1865-1869); a military tribunal sentenced Atzerodt to be hanged;
