Description: Austrian Chancellor Kurt von Schuschnigg (December 14, 1897-November 18, 1977) wearing an army uniform for the first time, attending memorial services for Austrian troops in May, 1936; Schuschnigg was against the ambitions of Adolf Hitler (April 20, 1889-April 30, 1945) to absorb Austria into the Third Reich; in 1938, Schuschnigg resigned under pressure from Adolf Hitler, Germany invaded Austria in March 1938 in what is called the Anschluss and annexed Austria; Schuschnigg was arrested by the Nazis and interned in concentration camps until he was liberated by the American Army at the end of World War II; he spent most of the rest of his life as a university professor in the United States;
